Chapter 10

Canadian Experience Class

The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) was introduced in September 2008 to provide an opportunity for people who have worked temporarily or studied as international students in Canada to apply for permanent residence. After all, it makes little sense to welcome students and workers into Canada, have them contribute to the country, get accustomed to the language and culture, and then send them packing! Their experience and education in Canada gives them an advantage in their transition into becoming immigrants, which, in turn, benefits Canada as well.

This immigration class does not function on a point-based system such as for Federal Skilled Worker applicants, but rather features a pass or fail standard, meaning that applicants have to meet all the requirements in order to be accepted.

Those who have applied under the Federal Skilled Worker program and wish to also apply under the CEC can do so, but they will have to pay separate fees and choose under which class their residence will be granted. If their skilled worker application has not been processed at the time they apply under the CEC, they may be entitled to a refund.

Note: As of January 1, 2015, the CEC will become a part of the new Express Entry program (see Chapter 12).
